Hi everyone,

I have a 60 litre tank with 6 x rummy nose tetras, 6 x neon tetras and 1 male dwarf gourami. The tank was cycled for 4 weeks before adding the rummy nose tetras 2 months ago. The neon's were added a couple of weeks ago and the gourami was a new addition last weekend. I carry out fortnightly water changes of 10-15% and the tank has a Fluval U2 filter. I keep the water temperature at 26c.

I'm new to the hobby and have tried hard with my limited experience to provide a good environment for the fish and so far we've been lucky to have no casualties. The tank is generally fine and all fish are happy except 1 of my rummy nose tetras who suddenly turned pale and shy on Saturday and had a visible trail of waste hanging out of him so I didn't feed the fish the next day thinking he'd just been greedy and needed to get it out of his system but he still hasn't fully recovered 3 days later and I'm not sure what to do for him.

Yesterday he did eat a little and tonight he has another trail of waste hanging out of him.

The other fish are all happy and fine, the 5 other rummy noses are bright red and chasing each other around the tank happily so I don't think there's anything wrong in the tank as a whole, it's just this one poor chap.

I'd really like him to recover but I'm not sure what to do for him so wondered if anyone has any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I'm really not sure what could cause this issue to him, probably an infection of some sort..
You could try feeding him some Daphnia, it's a really good food for intestinal infections!

Thanks, I'll see if I can find some Daphnia then.

I also need to sort out a quarantine tank for him first as otherwise there's not much hope of the food hanging around long enough for him to get it!

interesting - I've not heard of Daphnia combating internal infections before. Do you have a source?

It is a great laxative, therefore helps evacuate the nasty stuff out!

I used to feed this when my Betta was sick and pooping white stringy stuff.
It seemed to help him out!

When you set up your quarantine tank you can maybe try using methylene blue as an anti-viral solution..
