I have a pleco that appears to be dying, although I can't be sure. All day yesterday it was lying on its side near the edge of the aquarium. This is fairly normal, except that it was not latched onto the side of the aquarium. It moved around a little last night, and now it is back in the same place, although it is sucking on the side of the aquarium again. It's gill movement seems to be slow, and its fins look pretty ragged.

I'm not sure what I should do about it. The big problem is that I am leaving town this evening (Thursday), and returning on Monday. If it dies while I'm gone, it could spend two or three days rotting on the bottom of my aquarium before I return. I'm worried about what that could do to the water quality. I don't want one fish death to turn into several.

Should I consider euthanizing the fish for the sake of the others? If so, what would be the most humane way to do it?

Thanks!
