My female platy is slightly swollen on her right side, I've also noticed a slight dark shadow in the middle of her abdomen. She is also slightly bigger on her anul area and has white stringy poo. She is otherwise her normal self, eating well and swimming about. Water peramiters are all fine ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 0. I feed my fish a varied diet small amounts each day. Anybody have any ideas?

Is she with a male Platy, Molly or Swordtail, or even a male Guppy? Sounds to me like you might have a pregnant girl there. The dark spot you mention sounds like whats called a gravid spot. It's where her babies grow before she gives birth. you might notice that the dark spot will get bigger and darker and this is only a sign that her pregnancy is going well and the babies are growing.

Even if she's not with any males she still could be preggers. Females can retain sperm for a good while and can get pregnent (I think) up to three times with that one suply. How long have you had her?

But if you want to be really sure you could post a photo to let people see and I'm sure someone could tell you if I'm right or not : )

will try to get a photo, she is with male guppies, but thought they couldn't mate. the dark spot is right in the middle of her body looks like a shadow, i thought the gravid spot was supposed to be nearer to the anul area.

Hmm, well in that case it could just be that your over feeding. Have you tryed a day or two without food to see how she looks then? She could be bloated or constipated.

But yes, a photo would be great if you could get a clear one of her : ) Give a clearer idea of how she's looking.

Of all of the fish listed, only a swordtail or another platy can cause a platy to carry fry, although all of the others will try. Clear or white waste is often a sign of disease. Please get a picture and post it in the tropical emergencies section where people are more familiar with disease treatment.

tried getting a picture, but i'm afraid i can't get one clear enough to see. i let her go without food a couple of days, then gave her some pea. She is no longer swollen in the body and the shadow has gone, but i have now noticed what i can only describe as a very small clear bubble near her anus. she has also started to hide quite alot. her poo now looks normal too.

I'm afraid that to me that sounds like a prolapsed uterus. Have you found any fry? Have a good long look.

Keep trying to get a photo, even if it's a bit blurry. As long as it shows her clear enough to see what your explaining.

If it is a prolaps then I'm afraid there's nothing you can do for her. You can let her live untill she dies, which will be very soon or you could humainly help her along. I would help her along if it was me, but some others might not agree with that. It's up to you. But I'd also wait to see what others have to say as I'm not an expert.

I started treating with Melafix and feeding with pea, stopped feeding flakes completely, all this was in vain as she died this morning. :-(

Sorry to hear that : (

I'm afraid it's just a one of those things that sometimes happen. You couldn't have done anything for her, so don't feel bad.

Did you find any of her fry?
