One of my platys is looking very ill. She was always very vibrant and the only thing against her was that her mate was continually chasing her. I know this sounds horrible but of all my fish she is probably my least favourite and I know that I pay the others more attention. This is probably why I only just noticed yesterday how thin she has become and how she seems to have lost a little of her colour. She seems to be showing either signs of fin rot on her top fin but to be honest it looks more like she has been nipped. Her scales look a little rough and she has a loss of sheen and a couple of tiny white spots on her. At first I thought it was the dreaded whitespot back again after I treated the tank sucessfully 2.5 months ago. But the spots are so tiny you almost can't see them, infact it could just be where the scales are rough - I'm not completely sure. There was one on her body yesterday just before her tail fin but today I can't see it. I really don't think that she has worms but I'm questioning whether this could be something bacterial.

I've tried to take a picture but she's still swimming (and eating) very fast and I can't get a picture that isn't really blurred.

Just for the record:

water stats are all fine and have been for many months (nitrite 0, amonia 0, nitrate 20, ph 7.8).
Only thing to have been added to the tank lately are 4 new plants 2 weeks ago.
you can see from my signature what lives in the tank. There are 8 shrimp and a newly hatched tiny platy fry in a breeding net. One of my dwarf gouramis died back in early November after going very thin and losing colour so I'm wondering whether this is the same thing.

Any ideas guys?

Looking at fish tb, flukes , to internal parasites.
Check the anus of the fish to see if it's enlarged or red and inflamed.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Any bent spines on the fish.
The spots can you describe them abit more, how big are they and do they have a circling or red on the edge.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.

First, I've managed to get a picture

No signs of flicking or rubbing. Anus is slightly enlarge and looks white. Haven't noticed poo but will keep a look out. No bent spine on fish. From photo you can see loss of colour and change of texture of scales on one area of the fish. The spot on it's tail looks very large this evening, definite grain of salt look to it. Spot is unfortunately on opposite side of the fish to that pictured. No circling or red on edge. I think you can also make out damage to fin on the photo.

Sounds like she has internal parasites to me with bacterial infection on top.
I would get a worming med, get you some info.

Wilder I have some myaxin and protozin in my cupboard, is it worth putting either of these in my tank tonight? I'm worried that I have my shrimp and tiny baby platy fry but if it means saving my fish population then I'm willing to risk losing them. I have my small nursery tank but unfortunately it's on lend to my friend right now for her fry.

Like a velvet texture.
I would go in with the myxazin for now, get the worming med if you can.
Buy some garlic food.
Internal parasites cause alot of damage to the inside of the fish, they cause bacterial infections on top, once thet get really thin the damage has be done.

Ok Wilder, thanks for your quick response - as usual you're a star. I'll treat with Myaxin now and get some of the wormer tomorrow. Thanks again and I'll let you know how things go. Julie

To be honest she got alot going on with her, i doubt she will make it sorry, but you do need the med for the other fish.
Good luck.

Myaxzin has just been added to my tank and I've orded the worming med via the link you gave me and that should be here in 5 days approx. At least the myaxzin course will have been completed by then. Thanks again Wilder.
