Hi, I have had a little 2.5 gal tank set up on my desk at work for a few months now and it had cycled and settled and everyone seemed very happy, until 2 days ago I noticed my oto has become very lethargic. Normally he is bouncing around the tank, busy cleaning up, etc. He kind of owns this one little cave ornament I have, and he hangs out in there and every morning when I feed the fish he's in there (sleeping, I assume) until he realizes the food is falling and then he comes out and gets to work. I've grown quite attached to him actually, since he has such personality, and I named him Hoover.

He seemed fine until yesterday when I noticed he wasn't eating or busy around the tank, he was just on the bottom kind of sitting there. Today he is inside his little cave just sitting there. He changes position every so often, but I don't see his gills moving much or his mouth making the usual sucker movements.

I'm betting there's no way I can help him but I thought I'd ask anyway. :(

I tested and my levels are all normal. Nothing's been changed recently; the setup is the same as it has been for at least 5 months. I do 25% water changes twice a week. I do supplement his diet with Spirulina algae tablets.

The only thing I have noticed that's different is a small growth of green spot algae (which he can't get off) and a tiny bit of dark green hair algae on one leaf of my Anubias plant. I realize he doesn't eat these but could they be harming him? Neither is out of control and I was just going to let it go so long as it didn't get worse. Thanks!

I dont believe the algae would hurt him. Otos are notorious for getting sick all of a sudden. Sometimes its just a day or two, but there have been a few times in my experience that they have been alive one minute and gone the next. Sounds like you are doing all you can do for him so unless he shows external signs of an illness that you can diagnose then hope for the best. They really do grow on you dont they.....Also just remembered i had a single oto in a 10 gal tank that went lethargic and i bought him a friend and he picked right up. Perhaps if he is ok you could get him a buddy. :)
