and throw a prawn in my tank, its cycling and nearing the end , i thought i was fully cycled but alas i am not .

but my tank is lowering the ammonia level from 5 to 0 in 12 hrs .

all i seem to be doing is adding more and more ammonia ....

saltynav advised me , on the premise that my tank was cycled, to add a prawn....

shall i ?

CAN ANYONE ADVISE ????????????

Adding a prawn is not going to give you enough ammonia - it will just rot and generally be nasty.

If your ammonia is dropping like that then you should nearly be done - what is your nitrite doing?

nitrites were @ last reading 0.4

You are so close to being cycled that in many ways you could be considered done. 5ppm in 12 hours is 10ppm in 24 hours, this would equal an unbelievably stocked tank. Add enough ammonia to bring it to 5ppm, & wait 24 hours. If the nitrites zero out you're done.

ill add 4ml now , check the level at bedtime [ 10 hrs from now ] then add 9 ml if they dropped low enough.....

then check nitrites 24 hrs later

You told me your tank was cycled, the prawn or rotting flakes would keep a cycled tanks bacteria alive but It would be lacking if your still cycling.

i did ask if it was cycled , i thought it was, but it would appear it wasnt fully cycled , my mistake , but then i am a noob !

ive just checked again and my ammonia level AND nitrate level are both @ zero

would i be right if i said , i need to keep adding ammonia now , as i have been , then when im ready lower the temps and do a water change ?

EDIT : my nitrate levels are @ 50 ppm , so im adding ammonia , then ill do what our american buddy has suggested, almost done then :)

sounds like your done tho, i would say go an extra 4 days just to be on the safe side( keep testing and adding ammonia)..when you planning to stock it ?

As said above keep adding the ammonia once every 24hrs to take the tank back to 5ppm, this will keep your bacteria in tip top condition ready for stocking. However I would also recommend turning your temp down NOW to what you will use later, as I found my tank had a little 'hiccup' in the cycle once I reduced teh temperature. It recovered a day or so later, but better for that to happen whilst there are still no fish present :)
Then when you are ready to stock do the big water change to get rid of the nitrates and go get your fish :)
