Hi, I have recently been breeding gouldian finches (long process!). Anyway, a little while ago I bought 2 new gouldians. I have been keeping then in an aviary with zebras and other gouldians. Recently I noticed that one of the new ones has been acting lethargic and has only been sitting on only one perch only moving to eat and drink. I know this can be very serious as I have had zebras that died from this before, I'm not sure what it is though.
Any help is deeply appreciated.

Gouldain finches are very suscepatible to the cold, drafts on them at night can spell doom to them. Also you didn't say if the sick Gouldian is a male or a female, females need a lot of calcium in their diet as well as some oil to help stop them getting egg bound. Do you have a small cage that you can isolate the sick Gouldian in? And move the cage into a quiet room of your house wrap a blanket around three sides of the cage leaving the front open and then use a lamp shining into the cage to provide warmth (if possible use a red reptile heat lamp). Make sure you add water and food to the cage and check to see if the bird will eat and drink once it starts warming up.

Best of luck, birds hide illnesses so well it is usually too late to save them by the time they are so sick and too weak to hide their condition any longer.

Thanks, He is a boy, but now that the rainy season is over he is looking much more active, also my mum is going to treat thier water, just in case. It was a bonus that he got better because my other gouldian pair have just hatched a nest of five babies. I don't think that egg binding is going to be a problem any time soon though as there is about three cuttlebones throughout the aviary and I always see them go to eat from it.
