My female dwarf gourami has been hanging around the back of the tank all day, and has not eaten for about 2 days. I noticed earlier that her belly is rather swollen, so I have isolated her in a breeding trap and given her some shelled pea.

Does she look constipated or do you think it may be dropsy?

An epson salt bath.
What do you normally feed the fish.
Is she on her own as you could add the epson salt to the tank.

You have already issolated her.
Can't add the salt then as it got holes in it the trap thing.
I would advise an espon salt bath.

Well, she is still alive this morning, and quite perky, although she has not touched her peas!

She has got really long white stringy poo now. What is is??

Does she have any sore/ulcers on her? Particularly around her mouth? Can't see from your pictures.

If so, check out threads in the gourami forum - we've had a load of that problem lately.

I recently lost 5 fish to dropsy but it was the contageous type. First their stomaches started getting bloated clear stringy poop. Then red ulcers on their bodies and swollen faces. If you start to see any more signs I would use Pima fix. There isn't any proof that there is a cure to dropsy but it saved the rest of my fish who were at the ulcer stage. I treated for 7 days and it was gone. Good luck.
