Hey All,

Im new to the forum. I wanted show you all a picture of my Blue Gourami that seems to have someting spreading over his body for the past 8 months. Iv tried all the Baterial and Fungal medicines out their in a seperate hospital tank. Hes in a 55 gallon tank with all others including ohter Gouramis that are healthy. I dont know the water stats off the top of my head, but I dont believe thats the cause. The tank is loaded with all other fish that are healthy over a long period of time.

Has anyone seen this before?? Even treated him with hydrogen Peroxide  and its still growing but at a very slow pace. Thinking I need to just do a humane euthanasia on the little guy. Hes definitly not moving around as much and it looks painful. Im kinda attached to the guy because I cured him of Pop eye a little over a year ago. But he is blind in one eye!!

Never euthanized a fish before, but I hear putting them in the freezer in some water is the most humane and painless for them.

Any insight would help!!

THX for looking,

JLee

If you haven't already, I suggest you put him in a quarantine tank. I've been looking around on google since you didn't have a reply and I found another person asking on a different forum about black spots on their fish. Someone mentioned that "black patch necrosis", which could explain that black spot, is a symptom of Columnaris.
You could look at the Wikipedia page -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columnaris

I could be wrong but this is what I found.

I have no idea what that could be, but agree with Scrage that you should QT him.

Please don't freeze your fish, it's not humane. Use clove oil instead.

Please answer these questions.

1. Water parameters. (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, PH, temp', Hardness etc)
2. A full description of the fishes symptoms.
3. How often you do water changes and how much.
4. Any chemicals and treatments you add to the water.
5. What tank mates are in the tank.
6. Tank size.
7. Finally Have you recently added any new fish?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your input. Like I said in my initial post, this spot has been developing for the past 8 months. ive quarantined him each time I tried another treatment for up to 10 days at a time. Its doesnt seem to be contagious because I would think other fish would have been affected by now. All tank levels are within optimal levels, and water changes are done weekly. The article on Columnaris states that it spreads over 48 to 72 hours. This had been spreading slowly since last summer.

Moving this thread to Emergencies.

JLee, it would be really good if you could answer Ninjy's questions more fully.

1) - you need to give actual numbers from your last water test
2) - answered
3) - what percentage water do you change
4) - not answered at all.
5) - not answered at all.
6) - not answered at all.
7) - not answered at all.

The more info you give us, the more help we can give you.

Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Also how many and which type of fish are in the tank.

Black Patches

Symptoms:

Black patches, smudges, smears, spots or markings that suddenly appear and are not natural colorings.

microscope.jpg

Cause:

These markings are the result of skin cell damage. Black markings often appear in areas where the skin has been damaged by ammonia burns, bacterial infections, parasitic infestations, and injuries. These markings are often seen on fish just after a new tank has completed cycling, due to the high ammonia levels. These marks are also common in African Cichlids, especially around the mouth. These are scabs that have come from digging in the gravel or from fighting.

Treatment:

No treatment is necessary. Much like scabs, the blackened areas are a sign that the healing process has already begun. Keep water in top condition and the areas will gradually fade in less than a couple of weeks.

Do you have any snails in the tank?
Has a fish been picking on him?
