Hey, I appreciate any advice-
Tank size: 5.5 gallons (heated and filtered)
pH: 8.0
ammonia: 0ppm
nitrite: 0ppm
nitrate: 0ppm (have been doing daily water changes since she got sick, was 15ppm before I started water changes)
kH: unknown
gH: unknown
tank temp: 80
Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):
I was gone on a trip for 7 days, left the bettas without food for that period as I have done in the past with no issues. The morning of my return she looked normal, and I fed her her usual pellets which she ate. The next day when I fed them I noticed later that she didn't eat any of her food. She seemed a little lethargic so I tested the water parameters before doing my regular weekly water change but they were all normal. The next morning she was lying on the bottom looking listless so I treated her with Maracyn 1 & 2. I thought that me being gone for a week stressed her and she got an opportunistic bacterial infection because this has happened before and she was acting the same way and Maracyn 1 & 2 fixed the problem before. Now its been a full 5 days of Maracyn 1 & 2 and she is not better. She now has a lump or swelling on her left side. It's slowly gotten bigger over the past couple days (noticed it on day 2 of treatment), but it's not huge (I've seen pictures of much worse) but still very noticable. She's able to swim, she just chooses not too, except to come up for air. When she lies on the bottom she sits in a weird way so that her tail is bent on the ground supporting her upper half so she looks like she's sitting. She won't eat and hasn't eaten since the first day I returned from my trip. I tried to feed her f/t daphnia in case it was constipation, but she wouldn't eat any. She also wouldn't eat a blanched pea. I don't know if it's dropsy, there's no pine coning and the swelling is very localized, although I know there are many causes of dropsy so it's still possible. I don't know if I should do a second cycle of Maracyn 1 & 2 as the packages say this is ok, or if I should try a new med, or if there's anything else I should do.
Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% weekly
Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: nope
Tank inhabitants: 1 two year old female betta
Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): none- there have been no new additions to any of my tanks for over a year now, everything has stayed the same
Exposure to chemicals: not that I'm aware of
Digital photo (include if possible): I'll try to do this later- my boyfriend is angry at me and won't let me use his camera
Thanks in advance!
