Tank size: 14 litres (isolation/hospital/QT tank)
pH: 7.5
ammonia: 0.5 ppm (I know it is high. No idea why I have had a spike as filter is cycled and bacteria were kept fed between uses. This was the reading I got when I tested after noticing the fish was sick. I did a water change straight afterwards)
nitrite: 0.2 ppm (ditto above)
nitrate: 5 ppm
kH: Unknown
gH: Unknown
tank temp: 27 celcius

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Betta was acquired two days ago with a tiny hole in his fin that had what looked like a bit of cottony growth. Assumed was fin rot and treated with clean water and a little aquarium salt. Was very active, eating well and flaring at his tank mate. Came home from work today to find that his dorsal fin had almost entirely disintegrated and that the scales on his back were going white in a large circle. Does not look like a fungus. They've just gone white and look flakey, like dead skin. He's very inactive and breathing a little fast. Not a happy boy at all.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

None yet. Tank has only be set up for two days.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

Just dechlorinator.

Tank inhabitants:

Two bettas. One in large breeding trap. Acqurired at same time, from same place, so both QTed together.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Gravel and cave cleaned between uses with hot water. Old filter and heater. Only 'new' things are the fish and one of my breeding traps. It's an old breeding trap and is cleaned between uses with hot water.

Exposure to chemicals:

Perhaps deodorant? It's in my bedroom and I am careful.

Please don't just have a go because of the high ammonia and nitrites. I KNOW they are high, I'm just being honest about the spike. I've had worse spikes than this with bettas before and not seen these symptons, and I've seen these symptoms in cycled tanks with no spike. I want to know what it is and what medication I should be using. Last time I saw this it killed the fish within 24 hours so I don't have time to just see if clean water makes a difference. He's going to die tonight if I don't do something drastic.

that is almost certainly columnaris. it is presenting itself in the classic "saddle pattern".
get erythromycin antibiotic..i think it treats gram neg. bacs. do a large waterchange before treatment...sterilize all equipment . treat the entire tank, even if his buddy isnt showing symptoms..columnaris can be devastating. turn down temp to 26-25 degrees (lower temp= takesmore time for bacs to multiply. salt may also help as it lowers the bacterias tolerance to the water/environment.
best of luck!!! keep us updated.
cheers!
