Hello all, Im new here. I noticed for the past 3 days that my betta's stomach is getting unusually bigger and bigger. Today he literally looks like he is about to explode. Does anyone know what might be wrong with him? His scales looks like a porcupine and I have a feeling that he is not going to make it. I have him rooming with another betta and the other betta is doing superb eating normally and most importantly looks normal. plz help me fast.

It sounds like your betta has dropsy

The problem with dropsy is it is internal, not external, so you would have to get the medications into the fish. Most cases of dropsy are fatal, I'm sorry

You can try salt baths, though, use a tablespoon of salt (they suggest epsom salt) per gallon. Only leave the fish in this solution for 5 - 10 minutes. Is your betta on its own? Dropsy is highly infectious, and if there are other fish in the tank it can easily and quickly spread to them too. If he is in with other fish, remove him immediately and treat the other fish as well.

The outlook for dropsy usually isn't very good, especially if he has started pineconing, but good luck!

My betta has the same problem, Dropsy. Although I read that it is uncurable, I have had a few breeders tell me to use Mardel Maracyn Two. I bought the fresh water one. Give it a try, it is supposed to cure dropsy. Just reduce the dosage for the gallons you are using.

Edit: It is said to cure it withing a week or so. =P Thought I should add that it actually works lol
