My betta is obviously very sick or dying... He has been at the bottom of the tank resting on the rocks. I removed him from my 36g and into a smaller separate bowl where I could do water changes more often and so the other fish wouldn't bother him. I don't know if he has a medical problem or if he had his fin nipped. He tried to eat today (first time in a while) but he just looks awful. Any idea what is going on? He's lost almost all color and is looking malnourished even though he was well fed. I'm new to fish care but he was my sons first fish and we are pretty attached!

Well, the new water in the bowl is definitely a lot cooler. That could be what is wrong.  What other fish was he with?

Yes, please get the temp reading. And the other readings please. :) Oh, and how big is the bowl?

I recommend you get him at least a 2.5g tank with a heater ASAP. He is probably cold. What is the temperature in the bowl? How long has he been in it?
How much water do you change and how often? What are the water parameters? (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) What do you feed him? How much and how often?

Can you get a picture? HERE is some info on betta care.

to TFF btw!

I would start a course of antibiotics as he sounds in bad shape.

Perhaps frequent water changes aren't so good? I lost a betta before from changing the water too much and he got so stressed and died :(

Frequent water changes are one of the best things you can do for a sick fish that is dealing with bad water quality issues or needs pristine water to heal.  I highly doubt it was stress from frequent water changes that caused your betta to die.
OP -- How is your betta doing?  Any better, any worse, or still about the same?  Do you have a pic to show what he looks like?  It does help a lot to actually see the fish in question.

Antibiotics aren't good if the water condition is just bad.  It can easy kill the fish, if there isn't infection you shouldn't use it.

First off what are the water parameters and secondly are there any other symptoms than lethargic and loss of coloration?
