Hi guys I bought 2 siamese flying foxes this week did some reasearch on the but I'm getting conflicting info. 1 place is saying they are the same fish as the siamese algae eater and the next is saying they are different fish its doing my head in now can any1 help as I now I'm good for tank size because what I have found is they both need similar lengths but I can't find anything on numbers thanks

will watch this with interest as i inherited one of these and am currently in the same quandry, flying fox or siamese algae eater

They are different fish. There are a few different fish all traded under various names. The three common fish are cinese algae eater, siamese algae eater and false siamese algae eater. you should google the three and you'll probably find the fish you have. if you have a chinese algae eater they can be very aggressive and territorial as they get older and should be kept singuly.

Edit: it may be worth posting a picture on here of your fish

i think this is the problem, different websites say different things, some show the fish i have. and some showing a picture and description of a different fish but calling it the same, hence the confusion,

try going by its scientific name. they should never change

There is a table of characteristics in post 4

judging by that chart i still dont know, the horizontal stripe edge is smooth not zigzags so sugesting flying fox but it has no white stripe above the black one sugesting siamese algae eater, confused.com :S

yeah it took me a few attempts lol hope that helps people identify it for definate for me. as u can see i had trouble getting a pic of them because the neons and barbs kept looking at my fone lol

They both look like true siamese flying fox to me but its difficult to be completly accurate with the pics.

i would suggest you both youtube Epalzeorhynchus siamensis. see if they act the way your fish do and in a vid you can get a better view of the fish.

if not just google false siamese alae eater or flying fox. there deffinalty not chinese algae eaters :good:

Looks like a true Siamese to me. Once you've seen all four (SAE, false SAE, Flying Fox, chinese algae eater) in real life, the differences are obvious. The chinese algae eater looks nothing like the SAE in my opinion.

Here is a good site that helped me choose my SAE. My brother thought he had true SAEs, but in fact, he has a few false Siamese. I don't have the heart to tell him....
