hi,
why are siamese fighters so hard to keep. i have never managed to keep one alive for more than a month. also how long do
Gouramis live for? i have had my 2 for 6 years now and they are still going strong.

fighters aka bettas aren't hard to keep, my eldest is 2 years old.
depends on where you've got yours from, how you're keeping it, and what you're keeping it with!

What size tank was the fighter in? were there any tank mates? how often was the water changed?

As for the gourami, what type is it?

i got the last one from maidenhead aquatics. i have a 35 gallon tank with 1 clown loach, 2 Gouramis a red tale shark and 4 platys.

first problem it would probely be the gouramis harrassing the betta they dont get along very well also a betta wont do to well in a community tank if ther is a stron water flow in there
an ideal home for a betta is a 5gal+ tank on its own with no strong currents maby a few corie cats in ther aswell but would need at least a 10gal? maby more.

i think there your problem, don't think its the clown as i have one with my 4 females and the get along fine also don't think platy's would bother them either.

im think this is wierd but i have a fight with some plecs and another fish which i bought of my mate dont know the type and they are all happy been like this for 3years

well, bettas aren't bad with EVERY fish, I'm guessing they should be alright with plecs. But you should really look into what fish you're getting. don't wanna end up with dead fish just because of one you didn't know about. As for the main topic- gouramis + bettas = bad
betta + red tail shrk = also very bad
so there's your problem, bettas do BETTER alone because their tankmates are limitd. That doesn't mean you can't keep them with other fish though. They do well with snails, shrimps, most algea eaters, any fish that isn't nippy, and any fish that doesn't have long/flowing fins. That means no:
neons,
male guppies, or females with colorful tails,
sailfin mollies,
other bettas (unless you are keeping a sorority tank or breeding)
gouramis,
paradise fish,
and that's all i can think of right now but I'm sure there's many more.

rainbow fish :( i had 2 put a betta in my community tank for a while untill i could return it it was given me for a pressent but my sister didnt realise what would happen. nice thought but i had 2 wait 1 week before i could returbn the fish it harrased the rainbow fish and the gouramis no end untill the gouramie had enough and went evil on its ass. acually im suprised it gose to show that even fish have ther limits before they turn nasty on someone. i have even seem my blue dwarf gourmie chase off my pearl gouramie tho never seen them fighting synce lol
