I have never kept Siamese Fighting Fish, and have very little knowledge about keeping them, but....

At my LFS, I recently noticed that Siamese Fighting Fish were distributed between numerous tanks (one in each) sharing with whichever species being sold in those tank. Including Guppies (with no apparent problems).

I have read from more than one source suggesting (or rather saying) that these fish should not really be placed in the same tank as guppies etc. Having always known (or lead to believe) that suitable tankmates are limited, is this irresponsible of the LFS to house them in (very) many tanks of other species, giving the impression that they can be put in with "whatever you've got"? Or is the general advice a little over-cautious.

Say, if I didn't have my guppies, could a SFF live in harmony with Boesemani Rainbows and some Tetra?

(Don't panic, I'm not seriously thinking about this...just pondering)...

Hit and miss really, my local LFS has a betta in with guppies with no issues but they had to remove a betta from one of the guppie tanks this morning as he was going for them.

They say to not put a betta with fin nippers or long finned fish. But most little fish can be nippers, depending on their personality but I think they say long finned, as the betta may think it is another fighter.

But as above, depends on the betta in question

Also no long finned fish as BethK said but nothing too colourful either. They will think it is another fighter fish and they may attack it.
