Hi folks, I introduced 2 yellowheaded jawfish to my 30Gal just over a week ago and I've seen them maybe 3 or 4 times for just a few seconds. I anticipated them being shy but not like this and my biggest concern is that they aren't getting enough to eat. Just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences and how long it went on for? I had read quite a lot on their husbandry so the substrate is ideal and the only other fish in the tank just now is a firefish. Any tips?

They will come out. They're probably building a burrow somewhere.

Hmmm, cheers for the input guys but I found elusive jawfish no1 today; dried up on my carpet. I cut a perspex cover for the tank just especially for the jawfish but it must have jumped through the centimetre or so gap along two of the sides.

Ach.....

Oh... Have you seen the other one?

Not in 3 or 4 days. Its a shame, when I first introduced them any time i caught a good glimpse you would have thought I had just spotted the loch ness monster. I was in awe, they are absolutely stunning, pictures don't do the pearly jawfish justice at all. I'll see if anything pops up in the next few days anyway, its not looking good though. Ah, the joys of fishkeeping. :good:

Hope the one thats left comes out soon :good:

When I first got mine I didn,t see much of him for a couple of weeks as he made his hole around the back  . What I noticed was that he would go routing around the tank on a night time. So I picked the best place for veiwing him, started to dig the hole out for him and put a few small rocks near the new hole. Hey presto a couple of days later he was in his new hole.

Heres one of him in his hide out

Heres one of him out on the bum for food.

Looks nice gazbo, in the morning I could always see where they had been digging the previous night but the substrate hasn't changed at all in about 5 days. Hopefully all is not lost, I really struggled to find them in stock anywhere, it took me about 3 months to finally track them down. How is your tank covered?

Fingers crossed he turns up, Doesn,t sound good though

My tank is a Aquaone UFO 700 (175 ltrs) I kept the original front part of the hood but altered the lights so there is 7 24" T5's in it. But took the back compartment away that the pump and filter media where in and replaced it with a Deltec MCE600 skimmer on the back a home made refiugium on one side and a pair of computer fans on the other side. Then used the original lid to hide it i,ll take some pics if your intrested.

I must admit I do have a game keeping the PH around the 8 mark though

Can you look under your tank? By that I mean can you see the bottom glass of it? When I had mine I could look under the bottom since it is on a metal stand and see him in his little hidey hole.
Also, when you feed the fish stand very still for a while and see if you see him dart out for food. Mine also did that for a while.
Unfortunately my LM blenny decided he didn't like him in the rocks with him so the blenny harassed him until he swam around the top, and the clown didn't like him there so he harassed him until he stressed and died. But I agree with you, they are stunning fish! I hope he's still alive for you!

Hey Gazbo...just curious....noticing that your gravel substrate is awfully shallow looking. Does the beauty deal ok with it?

I have always had an affinity to these beauts.
