Ok, maybe not as weird a question as the title sounds but it's the best way to describe it
I have an adult male DG about a year old in my 100L/3ft community. He used to be out and about all the time, patrolling the tank, stealing algae wafers and so on.
A while ago, I got 6 bosemani rainbows, which he was fine with when they were small, but when they got to about 2 inches he started hiding (although I never once saw them bully or attack him).
So I got rid of them recently (about 2 or 3 weeks ago?) and replaced them with 9 Norman's lampeyes, as I figured they were smaller, more timid and more peaceful and he might start to come out again. No such luck.
So I also got two little juvenile female DGs about half his size in the hope that some lovely ladies might encourage him out. He's made a few trips out to investigate and give them a little nip if they come too close (which they did, trying to investigate the giant monster, bless). But other than that, still hiding behind the filter or lurking in plants looking grumpy as usual.
I've had a good look at him when he does come out and he looks big, fat and healthy, no injuries or sores. One thing I did notice is that although he is a neon blue, he used to sometimes get a few orange stripes but they don't appear any more.
It's a moderately planted tank with, water is about 24-26 degrees and all tests are as expected (0 nitrite and ammonia). Tankmates are 9 norman's lampeyes, 5 black sail cories, the aforementioned female DGs and a female bristlenose. Needless to say the two females are out and about pestering everyone and nibbling the plants exactly as the male used to.
Is there something I'm missing? Is he just a grumpy old git or is there anything else I can do to get him to make an appearance?
