 Can any one tell us how the Shubunkin breeds - bubble/egg/live etc.

Our shubunkin has gradually increased in girth size over the last week; we haven't over fed the fish (if this was the case then surely they would all be fat?), nor do her scales protrude.

Please can someone advise us on these cold water fish!

What do you feed the fish as to many dried foods can make them bloat up, try some shelled peas.
Goldifish lay eggs.

Our fish are fed:
Goldfish Flake
Algae Wafers (they pinch these from our pleco & catfish)
Goldfish balls (balled pellet like food - ran out of it the other day)
Prawns (maximum 5 very small cooked & shelled prawns - Tesco's Value)
Cucumber (also stolen from the pleco & catfish)

All of the above are measured at less than a pinch and are only fed once a day.

Does this help in any way???

Are the fishes scales sticking out at all? Can you see any other symptoms, wether behavioral or physical etc?

What other fish are in with it?
How big is the tank?
How warm is the water?
How long have you had the fish?

Goldfish (this is just a goldfish variety - so it's an egg scatterer and can't get 'pregnant' (it can become 'gravid' though)).

Goldfish grow extremely quickly when in good conditions (hence my initial questions) so it could just be normal growth. Hopefuly you are aware of their large tank requirements and potential size.

Having said that, bloating/constipation, as was mentioned, may be an issue but a varied diet like the one you seem to be providing is usualy very healthy and shouldn't cause trouble.

Internal bacterial infections are another matter (which is why you were asked about the scales sticking out like a pinecone). I'd like to further ask whether the fish has lost its appetite at all (unlikely with goldfish :p), how is it swimming, does it have red streaks on its body or fins and does it have white/red/black edges to fins?

BTW, how big is this goldfish? Small goldfish often have growth spurt. Also, it's possible to sex adult goldfish visualy as males will develop little 'tubercles' on the gill cover when in breeding condition. It's difficult to tell without practice and they may not be in breeding condiition but, if you at least try, if the fish is male, you can rest assured it's not gravid :p I found this site that nicely illustrates what to look for in male goldfish: http://www.fishpondinfo.com/gfish3.htm

BTW, you may want to post in teh coldwater section :)

Just to add you shouldnt feed goldfish prawns, as theres something in them that makes them ill. Cant remember where I got that info from, somewhere reputable though.

I've just been watching 'her' for about an hour and can only provide the following info:

Behaviour; Swimming around with ease, negotiating turns smoothly
Appetite; No change - hungry as per normal (I only feed my fish once a day)
Appearance; Scales are flush against the body
Sexing; I am guessing it is a 'She' due to the length of the lower fin (the other Shubunkin has a very long lower fin therefore male????)

Is this all ok??

I've placed a tube in the tank incase 'she' wants to hide and lay anything!

No take her out of the tub she will be stressed, you will have to provide some hiding spaces for her.
Goldfish are prone to swim bladder so i would feed some shelled peas twice a week, cook for a few minutes, let cool down, pop out of shell, mush between fingers and add to the tank, my goldfish loves them and it keeps him going to the toilet.

The fish never swells up whan it eats dry food - fish aren't mamels so they don't get pregnant but they do lay eggs they look like jelly but are tiny clearish and circular. My shubunkin layed sum last year but non of them suvived (long story) My fish did swell up during that time but thats ok because threres no harm done. They start laying around 3-4 years of age and carry on but im not sure if they contuine to lay egg over years orw whteter they stop after that occation. Mine starts changing spots over seasons and shes quite spotty during spring and winter but losees hers when shes in summer - hope this had been useful!!!
