now that i have a tank full of newly hatched betta fry, i thought id ask, can i keep some small shrimps with them to help keep the tank clean? i imagine they would be good for clearing up algae, uneaten food and will quickly dispose of dead or sick fry. i went into pets at home as i knew they have some "yamoto shrimps" and asked advice. they young man who served me was very good, he wast sure but rather than try and sell me them anyway, he recomended that i wait until they fry are swimming strongly, as although he had not heard of shrimps eating fish fry, he told me that they are quite good at catching small live food like blood worms and daphnia so best not at this stage.

could anyone advise?

i think until an inch all betta fry are best left on there own. but other people have done different just my opinion. how many fry did you get?
Good Luck

I dont know if i would go with Shrimp but when i Spawned betteas i always used snails they worked great.

did you put the snails in when they were just born? im curious because im going to try spawning again.

im not sure ho many there are in there, lol, quite a few, they are starting to move about a bit. estimate between 80 and 100.

i was alway under the impression that snails were quite heavy polluters?

I've always kept snails in the tanks with my fry, one spawn I was moving a snail into the growout when the babies were free swimming and 2 ghost shrimp snuck into the net and into the fry tank, I figured they'd be fine in there so I left them, then over the next couple days the babies began dissapearing, and there were no dead babies at the bottom. I knew it wasn't the snails eating them, so I figure it was the shrimp.

Actually after my first spawn I relized that the Tank will get some wasted food left on the bottam of it and ur not suppose to change the water for about 3 weeks afetr the Fry have hatched due to the fact they are so fragile and any little stress could cause you to lose some. So I tryed snails second time around and they worked great! I had 3 10 gal spawn tanks i keept up and running at all times but did weekly water changes on even if fish werent kept in them I did this to allow these tanks to stay cycled so toxic levels werent reached when the fry were growing ( like I said they are fragile) After the first spwan like i said i decided to get snails put them in and kept them in so ya they would be in even b4 I put the bettas in and never had a problem.
