I've been thinking of starting a new little community tank with a pair of Microgeophagus ramirezi, some freshwater shrimp (possibly cherry shrimp) and maybe some glowlights.
I'm hearing mixed reports about keeping shrimp with rams though. The species of ram I want to get is Microgeophagus ramirezi. 'paulioo' told me in the invertebrates section of this forum that he had some cherry shrimp and amano shrimp that were eaten by his bolivian rams, but I'm pretty sure that the bolivians are more aggressive than ramirezi? Obviously I may be wrong here... feel free to correct me. He also didn't mention how big the shrimp were or how big the rams were at the time. Surely this would make a difference too?
Would the shrimp end up as 'expensive snacks' for my rams if I went ahead with this setup? The tank is heavily planted with Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, Riccia fluitans and Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mi Oya' and currently has no inhabitants. So there are lots of hiding places for shrimp and fish alike.
Obviously if shrimp and rams aren't appropriate tankmates then I will have a rethink. Thanks for any help in advance!

well cherry shrimps are usually pretty small but let me say this
rams are cichlids and cichlids are pretty much unpredictable. they might or might not eat the shrimp.

the only way to find out is to try it! but my guess is they would try to eat them

This seems to be the general consensus from my posts on various forums. Cichlids (even dwarf ones) = unpredictable. I think maybe I ought to do a little more searching on fish lists and databases to try and find something equally attractive, but less disruptive. Thanks for your input.
