I have decided to use an internal filter in my shrimp tank because they are quiet and relatively low maintenance (the tank will be an a bedroom so it needs to be quiet) but I am stuck for ideas on shrimp proofing the intake.

I thought about putting some tights/stockings offer the intake but I don't know if this will work.

All ideas greatly welcome!

Thanks, TheAquariumGuy

You can use tights, but they're very fine, so will clog up quite quickly.

The best things I've found are coarse filter sponges or 'tulle' (the mesh fabric tutus and kid's seaside fishing nets are made of) rubber banded on. You should be able to find black sponges/tulle and rubber bands so it won't look too bad :)

This is a picture of my filter intake with a piece of kiddie fishing net, i happened to choose a green one so that it sorta matches the pipe :)

Its simply tied on with fishing line, and did the job very well, did not lose any RCS shrimps once i added that.

And there are sponges you can buy or adapt to fit over the filter intake, shrimps in particular love this as there will be food particles collected on the sponge and fairly often the sponge will have shrimps on it, happily munching away

thanks guys :D   i have cut up a brand new scouring pad so that i get the sponge back off of it and i am going to tie it to the filter intake with fishing line. thanks for the ideas :p

I bought the little "microphone" looking sponge for my 10 gallon breeder tank.   And so far, not a single shrimp has been lost that I know of.   And I have loads of fry in there!
