A friend of mine adopted a shrimp off my sister, whcih I assumed was amano shrimp but its behaviour is a *little* extreme.

Firstly it killed 2 of my sisters tetras, I witnessed it chasing them alot and in the morning one was half eaten (there were only 4 tetras and 2 shrimp in the tank)
It kills any amano shrimp added to the current setup
It eats snails

Any ideas what this shrimp is?

BTW my friend is pretty good with a macro lens...

looks like some sort of macrobrachium, no idea which......but those long pincers tell you it's not a freindly shrimp for a community tank.

excellent photos by the way!

Thank you! This is the exact same shrimp that until yesterday I had in my community tank, when it caught and ate the tail of one of my new juvenile pygmy corys. Had previously been told it was an amano or ghost shrimp but as its grown it's been looking more menacing. Might also explain a few mysterious disappearances. It's going to its new home at the lfs today, shame as it is a great little character, fish eating tendencies aside. Brilliant photos by the way, only ones I've ever seen that match my shrimp! :good:

I know macrobrachium can be a terrible addition to a community tank ( I have watched them actively hunt tetras and guppies in the past) but I did find in a biotype tank they where pretty well behaved when kept with empire gudgeons and local creek snails, and small native grass shrimp. The young rainbow fish did disappear but I am not sure who was to blame for that either the gudeons or the macro's.
