Shredded Fins

Thanks for posting that Mars. I have never had a problem with any of my fish using Melafix, specifically with any labyrinths I had. SH

Thank you Mars for you explanation. Melafix and Pimafix are the only medications that I currently have and have never had a problem with it.

But, as woodstock said, a natural alternative can work too :)

I guess its like, some people take paracetemol for headaches, some people use 4head and vitamin c boosters. Personal preference.

Woodstock: where do you get garlic juice? And can you buy food with garlic already in it?
I found some but it was flakes, not pellets and I dont want to buy it as my new betta will probably be fed on pellets and will turn his nose up.

Oh and isnt betta spa good for healing bettas? Or the almond leaves . You could try that natalie.

Well, I don't have the garlic JUICE, I have McCormick's garlic powder (it's pure pure pure garlic though, nothing else). I mix it in water, which basically makes it just garlic juice.

Not sure where you'd only get garlic juice, but just go to a local store, get some diced / cubed garlic, and it should already be floating in the juice. Hopefully you'll find a way to actually use the garlic and not waste that either :). I'm pretty sure you're supposed to keep it refridgerated.

Then you take their betta food, pellets or whatever, and allow it to soak for at least a minute. Leave UP to 10 minutes (although 10 minutes isn't that necessary). Both my bettas hate anything too soggy, which is why I can only do a minute. But it seems to work fine, and it HAS Shown great improvement in healing their tails without use of any medication (aside from aquarium salt as a preventative). Hope it helps you as well :)

And I don't understand your very last statement?

Ah I was just suggesting to natalie that she could use Indian Almond Leaf to help her betta a bit on the way to recovery.

Heres the thread on it . http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/41676-indian-almond-leaf/

Lots of betta breeders sell it and swear by it.

And I believe its one of the main ingreedients in Betta Spa, but not sure as I've only heard people mention it.

EDIT: If you cant be bothered to read the whole lot, heres the relevant bit:

indian almond leaf has been used to cure sick fish of bacterial infections and to help speed up healing of damaged fins or body injuries. it should be noted that indian almond leaf is an alternative to commercially produced medicines but it's not a magic "cure-all", especially when dealing with diseases like dropsy, velvet etc. think of it as more of a preventative medicine. we have set up an indian almond leaf "betta spa" tank that all our fish spend some time in once a month.
if you choose to use indian almond leaf as a medicine you should be prepared to keep your fish in the tank for 10 - 14 days, avoid direct sunlight, keep the water temperature around 70 -82 degrees f. and feed live food preferably, to achieve desired results.

Yup, I've heard of indian almond leaves before. The way to get it isn't the best for me (I'm not allowed to buy online for any reason whatsoever). Unless I can find it anywhere, as in at a store, then it's not the biggest choice for me :\ But I have no doubt in it, it seems like something all betta owners should have... and it also tins your water, doesn't it?

Yeah it has tannins in it which make the water go a bit orangey-brown. Like tea :) tannins are what make tea brown, I believe.

just realised how that sounded and your water deosnt look like actual tea, just tinted.
