i moved them into a separate breeding tank so they could spawn in peace..
the eggs have been laid and fertilized but, the females ovipositor is still showing a little bit is she still got eggs to lay or will is this just swelling that will go down?

She may be ready to spawn again, but more likely just hasnt gone fully back in again.

Why do you think you need to take them out? Leave them in peace and they should look after the eggs/young very well on their own.

ive heard that captive bred rams are not great carers for there young..do you think they will mouth brood?

No they will keep them in the cave/pot whatever you have in there for a while, then once they are out in the open they will round them up as need be, I assume they are the only fish in the tank.

In many cases, if this is the first spawn, they may eat the eggs, or if the eggs hatch, eat the young, they can do this several times until they feel everything is ok or until they just get the hang of it, so if it happens dont be alarmed, they will eventually do it correctly and you will have fry free swimming about, its best to leave the pair to get on with it though, the more interference from you the more likely they are to eat the eggs/young.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

i have java moss in the tank which the eggs have been laid on..
ill keep an eye on the tank and check that the fish have not ate the eggs..
they are the only fish in the tank..what is the purpose of keeping the parents in the tank once the eggs have been laid and fertilized?

the parents will tend the eggs eating bad or infertile ones and will help water to keep moving over the eggs to prevent fungus and stuff
scot :good:

The parents take care of them. Especially if the fry are having a hard time eating the food ( such as flakes), the parents have been known to eat it, and spit it out, into tiny peices. The fry always do better with the parents in the tank. They grow faster.

ok i will keep them in it seems to be in there favor..
i didnt konw how easy it was to breed dwarf cichlids..
i only just got the tank yesterday..

Did you use a mature filter? Because if you didnt, those rams will be in serious trouble, they will not tolerate any ammonia or nitrIte at all.

i siphoned the same water from the original tank they came out off into there new one..and used a mature sponge filter..

yes i would never move any of my fish into a new tank without using a mature filter..
how often should i do a water change?and by how much?

Same as normal, although I dont know what you do normally

I used to clean my rams tank out 2/3 weekly, 20% change each time, just to keep the nitrItes as low as possible.
