Should I Owe (own) Up ?

the law is on your side
you have made an attempt to pay and they told you how much to pay
which you clearly did.
the only thing is now a moral dilema
personally I think it is their mistake and they should suffer the results.

I think you're thinking about it too much, bloo :)
Maybe they were half off  OR, maybe they're like my lfs and you get a discount the more you buy. You would never know this while browsing my lfs as they don't advertise the fact, unless you saw the small sign hanging at the employee bagging area. It's sort of like :
Buy two= 10%
Buy 5 =25%
and so on up to 50%

Naughty, naughty bloo! :p

Seriously though, they made the mistake and you asked them to double check. Under the trades descriptions act (ok, so I'm quoting with no real reference here!) if something is marked as a specific price or run through the till at that price by the retailer, they have to stand by it.

Think of it this way, you short changed them (accidentally) by less than £20. The guy on the till would have spent ages sorting that out, then someone else would have had a go later, then there's probs with stock etc etc - you probably saved them money in man hours alone!

Oh, I once walked out of Debenhams with some socks hooked over my arm. Completely forgot they were there! Left the store, walked to the end of the shopping centre, raised arm to push door and thought 'Oh Sh*t!!!' - walked straight back, apologised and paid for them. Sales assistant looked at me like I was crazy.

Imagine the old shrimp mans reaction .... 'Eh? What was that you say?....'
:-(

PS - I'm drunk so no-one take offence, ok?

i personally work for a little family run fish shop...and its the little mistakes in adding and punching in numbers wrong that hurt the business...we barley make ends meet now because we dont mark things up very high, we try to bring the fish hobby into peoples lives at an affordable price...makes it hard when things like that happen...just somthign to think about

I think you're thinking about it too much, bloo
My sentiments exactly.... your stressing yourself out.... relax and forget it. If he mentions it to you then pay the excess on the other hand then forget all about it

I say to do what your conscience tells you to do. Determine what your conscience is telling you. It really doesn't make a hill of beans what I or anyone else thinks. You must live with yourself. If you believe you must make it right by paying the difference, then by all means don't let anyone tell you different. If you don't think it is a big deal, then go with that.
You are the person who will live with yourself, no matter. You can't escape yourself. You can only ignore yourself
Best Wishes,
Bryan

I don't really think it's a huge deal, but it would definitely make you feel better about it if you told them. They probly will look at you strange though - I bought 6 rosy tetra from my LFS a while ago, and they gave me 7, I didn't realise at the time, called them later to tell them, and they clearly thought I was mad.
Still feel better for telling them though.

Are you sure he wasn't just being kind? I know at two shops I frequent they usually are always giving me deals. They'll total it up and say that'll be 200 crowns or they'll say I'll give that to you for 200 crowns even if they know I spent 250 crowns. I even got some java moss thrown in the other day for free. :D

I seriously wouldn't worry about it...if it was a serious mistake I'm sure all the stuff you've bought in the past and will in the future for retail will make up for it in no time.

You're got a better conscience than I, bloo. I once paid $11.80 for a pack of a couple hundred artist quality coloured pencils that were supposed to be $118.00... I felt bad for all of 5 minutes, but honestly I didn't even realise the mistake until I was almost home, and I live pretty far from town so there was no way I was driving 20 miles back just to empty my wallet some more :p.

I think you're good for telling them though, and I'd probably do the same in your situation since I'm on good terms with my LFS as well.

If the sales assistant got it wrong its there own fault. You should probably tell the manager so that they can make sure that their staff do make too many further errors, although i would be surprised if they demand the money back as it is their fault!

Dont feel too bad you did nothing wrong and you did ask him at the time if he was sure it was correct, you didn't knowingly short change the shop did you!

Ben

Thanks for all your views guys

It wasn't the sales assistant - it was the manager who's always in the store.

When I asked if he was sure he got the price right, as it sounds too little - he said "yes, 10 shrimp @ £2.50 = £12.50 + blablabla = £22.50".
So in his head, he clearly got it right.
No discount or any such thing (was intended) - I'm pretty sure about that.
He gave me one free shrimp because they are so small, but that's as far as the discount stretched I'm sure.

Just to put my own mind at rest, I'll tell him next week (I pretty much pop in there once a week anyway). By which time he'll probably go "huh ? :S " - but at least my slate is then clean B)

well i have on several occasions been given change for £20 when i actually gave a shop assistant/bar person a £10..........have i marched right back & owned up???? er..no!!! but i think if it was a shop where i went all the time & knew/liked the people that ran it like your elderly shopkeeper i would own up like you are doing...

Now for the paranoia....

perhaps your manager friend is also a member on this forum.. watching to see what you do...

Squid.

P.S. im sure he isnt.. ;) ;)

P.P.S. How many shops would let you know the next time you went in if it was the reverse.. if your LFS would, then thats worth considering too...

Majority of the stores where I live would deserve every single last red cent wringed out of them as possible, they are a bunch of rogues. I have often gone in when the main aquarium section people have a day off so I can purposefully try and get a bargain from employees who don't know what they are doing (Yes, I know, I am destined for hell in a handbasket when I die, just as well only the good die young, at this rate I'll live forever  ). The way I see it, they do their best to rip their customers off at every opportunity (and have even bragged about it with customers in the store at one place) so bugger em, I take em for all I possibly can. I have scored plenty of stuff way cheaper than I should have thanks to deceitful timing and have no qualms or conscience about it, they'd do it to me.

On the other side of the coin, there is a store I frequent all the time who have workers who often do me favours (throw in extra glass shrimp, twice as many blackworms than normal, etc. One of the girls there likes me and gives me a ton of freebies, she makes the missus want to stab her in the eye with a fork - the missus' words, not mine - but she is good for my fish, especially my eels. It's amazing how many blackworms a flash of a smile can be worth  ) and I don't rip them off and often help them out with fish info, etc. They talk to me for ages sometimes, pickin my brain and I guess they like to return the favour once in a while, that coupled with how much I buy from them on a regular basis.
