Should I Go Marine?

Hi All,

I have been to my LFS yesterday and looking at the marine fish just makes me want to give it a go! However....i have no idea where to start. I am going to search around on here for some reading material but what i wanted to ask people on here was, have you done both before? How much additional work is a marine tank? Ive noticed the fish are alot more expensive...does this work the same for everything to do with the marine tank? Is the general maintenance more expensive?

I run both and the difference between marine and FW is not very much at all. The only difference I notice is fewer water changes but having to pre-mix the water. If you go with a reef then it will be around the same maintenance as a planted set up and if you go for an acro-farm then you are in for a whole lot of work.

i currently run a 5 foot tropical planted community tank and a little marine nano tank.
i can honestly say that the small marine tank is a hell of a lot more work than the standard freshwater set up.
its also much more money if you want to get the best out of it.

BUT i beleive the marine tank is also much more rewarding, because if you do put the effort in it can look amazing.

in the future i will probably ditch the freshwater all together to make way for a big marine tank.

the tank you're getting looks ideal to start a marine setup in, but my advise is to take everything very slowly. read alot before everything you do and ask lots of questions on this forum as they're a brilliant bunch of people!

Thanks for the reply guys. I have set up a journal as i am planning on starting this next week. Ive done loads of research but still not much further forward in understanding the in-s and outs of marine tanks lol.

What is an acro-farm? Lol
