Right now I have a 10 gallon tank with one dwarf gourami and 2 zebra danios. I also have a pictus catfish who I am lucky to see once a week as he has a cave he dwells in.

I did have 2 dwarf gouramis, but one died. The one I have left does not seem happy. He constantly scans the sides of the tank like he wants out. Do you think it would help to put another dwarf in there with him ? Should it be same or opposite sex ?

I am setting up a 55 gallon and when it is cycled the gourami(s) will go to that tank along with the catfish. He just seems so unhappy :(

Thanks

Usually, gouramis are better kept in a trio with 2 females and 1 male. This is because the males like to chase the female and may stress them. Having only 1 female and male would stress the single female too much, while 2 females lessens the aggression. Having 2 males would mean they would fight for territory, and so far, a 10 gallon tank wouldn't be enough for 2 males.

I would wait till you setup the 55 gallon tank before you add more dwarf gouramis. It'll do fine alone for now.
