I have had my 200litre tank running for 7 months using sand instead of gravel. I was reading an article on the internet saying that you should change the sand after a few months.

I know that gas pockets can build up around my plants and i use a plastic rod to poke around the plant to release the gas fortnightly.

Is it necessary to change the sand regularly?

use what you like, gas pockets in aquariums are nothing to worry about, but sand does tend to discolour around plants when you got light sand. a nice black sand and no problem. easier to clean too :)

I certainly hope not, it hardly wears out afterall. I just move it around a bit and wouldn't consider changing it unless it was to revert to gravel (which I'm thinking of doing as sand cleaning is a chore).
