Should I Be Worried?

Well... i guess i didn't look to much into if the second story of our house could hold a 65 gallon tank.... would this be a problem? Our house is 20 years old and were pretty sure support beams separate each room, and id be placing the tank on a corner wall in my room....
The tank is also 4ft which is longer than it is tall so don't know if that contributes to weight distribution...

well....this is kinda embarrassing considering i already have the tank....
just don't want to wake up and walk through a hole in the floor...and have the kitchen flooded...

It should be fine as long as it goes across the floor braces instead of along them.

You don't need to know exactly where they are, just what direction they run.

You don't need to know exactly where they are, just what direction they run.

so i want the tank to run WITH the direction their going right? not against it? meaning its going ---> with the beam that is also going --->. Not crisscrossed?

No, you want the tank running perpendicular to the direction of the floor joists.

If you can access the attic above the room the joists in the attic will run the same way as the floor joists below. If you have a drywall ceiling you can tap the ceiling to find which way the joists run in the ceiling. A hollow sound means no joist, a solid sound means joist, follow the solid sound for a length to see what direction they run.

Anyone familiar with construction or remodeling can look at the room, and probably see which direction they run if the ceiling is drywall. I have yet to see a perfect drywall job, ceilings are the easiest area to see. I hate doing ceilings.

i'm going to guess that you are in the USA. building codes in the US are fairly similar between all of the states. a 65 gallon tank really shouldn't be an issue in a second floor apartment. i know fish keepers here in CA that have 200+ gallon tanks in second floor apartments without any reinforcing.

the 50, 55 and 60 gallon tanks that i own are all 4 ft long. and all wall and floor joists are 16" apart. so you should be able to get the tank to sit across at least 3 joists. and frankly, i don't think it's an issue with a tank that small.

yeah I am in the USA (AMERICAAAH!) So ill try and check to see which way they are running, but from what ive heard 100+gallon tanks are what you need to worry about...

Your floorboards will run across joists so length of tank should go same way as floor boards

Just lift the carpet up and see which way the floor boards run, your joists will run opposite way. Your tank should be fine though.

so to overall just play it safe im putting it on a diagonal from the corner of my window to halfway on the wall. Basically going from one wall that joins with the other (90 degree angle). so making a triangle with my tank and to walls. .....lol
