Hi all,

I bought a female blue german ram today to go with my male I got on saturday. I did the 'work' before hand, and she seemed fine. I was just downstairs watching the fish, as you do, and she was swimming around a little, but my main concern was that she was 'breathing' very rapidly, both with her gills and her mouth, I cant see any excess slime or mucus.

Stats;

A-0ppm
Ni-0ppm
Na-15-20ppm

Any help much appreciated.

D.

Does she look stressed.
Does she look pale or darker in colour.
Check the gills to see if they look pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed.
Check water stats and increase aeration.
How long did you climatise her for.

OK,

I cant really tell whether she looks stressed, but she seems to be re-gaining her colours a bit, from when I first added her.

They look pale-ish, but with no mucus.

Will turn air pump on now.

I put the bag of LFS tank water in bag, closed for 27mins * I know that because I looked at my watch before and after * I then added about another 30-40% of the bag more of my tank water. Left for 25 mins * Same reason again * and then added her.

Thanks, D.

[Good to see you back, by the way.]

Ok if she gaining colour now sounds like she was stressed and I heavy breath when stressed.
Just increase aeration abit to help her.
Best of adding small amounts of water to the bag if there a big difference in ph.

There shouldn't be a massive difference, as we are all on the same water supply, Thames Water.

That's fine then.
When fish are pale it usually means stress or desease.
But if her colouring come back now its fine.
Just keep an eye on her breathing, it could of just been that she was stressed.

I will go and check on her in about an hour or so, and will let you know how she is then, the lights are off for the evening now though, so I will have to use the lights for the kitchen to find her..

Thanks again!

I turned the airstone on at about 9 this morning, and it has been on ever since, and she is still breathing excessively. I think I can see some mucus, but I really dont know what im looking for, if anyone could show me a picture of what I should look for, it would be much appreciated.

Im now starting to get concerned.

Is the fish flicking and rubbing against things in the tank.
Mucas on gills can be a number of things from parasites, bacterial, bad water quality, ph shock.
Not sounding to good if i'm honest.
Do the gills look pale or red and inflamed.
Any mucas on the body of the fish or is it just the gill area.

Nope, if anything, she just sort floats about an inch from the bottom, and then goes for a 'stroll' and floats for a bit more, no flicking, no rubbing.

The gills look slightly inflamed, but that might just be what they are like, as I didnt study her before I bought her.

IF it is mucus, its on the outer edge on the inside of the gill.

Thanks, D.

Can you isolate her.
You will have to increase aeration in the hospital tank with the anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

No, not really, I have a 27L tank cycling now, and if I put her in there now, she would go straight into a Nitrite spike! That wont do her good!

What interpret meds? Are they expensive? As i would be my mum who would have to buy them, and I have fallen out with her...So it might be difficult to do..

D.

The anti internal bacteria med by interpet about 3.50 to 4.00 pounds it depends where you buy it.
