I can't believe this actually happened.
Basically, a few weeks ago i grabbed a handful of duckweed from my pond to put in my of my fish tanks- but i had a water change coming up in the tank so decided to just plonk the duckweed in a small plastic tub of water on the window sill for the mean time so i could put the weed in the tank after the water change when it was ready.
Anyways, i missed putting the duckweed in the tank after the water change (forgot) and so the weed ended up staying on the window sill in its small tub of water for the next water change. When i got around to doing the water change, i decided to put the duckweed in the tank- during its time on the window sill though, all kinds of tiny little pond critters had started to thrive in the tub of water, so i decided to just study them for a few minutes before putting the duckweed in the tank. But to my total shock, i saw a tiny fish fry swimming about in the tub of water
!
This tub of water had been sitting on the window for about two weeks, having only had one tiny top up of undeclorinated cold water during that time- and the amount of water in the tub was a tiny amount, only about a small glass-full. The water had probably suffered all extremes of temp sitting on the window sill in the sun, so i was completely shocked to find that a fish fry had hatched out in the water!
Now the only way fish eggs could had gotten on the duckweed is from the goldfish in my pond, which have been there for about a month or so now- but i totally didn't think it was the time of year for them to be breeding (goldfish are supposed to spawn in early spring when the temperatures start to warm up after winter). But the fry could only be a goldfish fry, since up until the goldfish were put in the pond, the pond didn't have any fish in it at all for two years (and its only two years old) and all the plants have been in the pond for about two years as well.
But my fiance said he saw the goldfish getting frisky in the pond recently after i filled the pond up with lots of cold fresh water (the pond water has been evaporating a lot recently), so i guess the large amount of fresh cold water from the hose could have encouraged the goldfish to spawn (and the behavior my fiance described the goldfish doing did sound very much like spawning behavior), so i guess i can safely assume that the goldfish did spawn and one of the eggs must have got stuck to the handful of duckweed i took out of the pond and put in the tub for later use in my fish tank.
The fry kinda looks like a cross between a danio and a guppy fry and is off-white in color and is a little longer than a guppy fry. Its in good health right now- when i discovered it i put it in bowl and slowly acclimatised it overnight to my livebearer tank and then put it in a fry net which has two platy fry in it. The fry took very easily to eating dried fry food, although it still looks a little bemused around its two platy fry mates.
I'm still just so shocked though that a fish fry actually managed to hatch out in such conditions! I really hope the fry survives and grows up (its at a very vulnerable stage and tiny size right now), i'm 99% certain its a goldfish fry- Pretty cool, huh

If it survives you gotta give it a special name
.
