Sugar coating and nicely nicely? I don't think so
I would reply with something to the tune of :
" shutting off the entire tank, and most importantly the filter for two days, purely to make room for a christamas tree is abhorrent, cruel, and quite possibly the most idiotic and unessescary thing I have ever had the misfortune to hear of . You blatantly do not give a toss about the health of the fish if you are so lax as to simply switch off what is basically a life support system in order to make way for a crappy tree full of tacky ornaments for the christmas period. If you were tired of keeping the fish and wanted rid of them you could have simply said so and kept the tank running until collection. Christmas isn't going to run away and you could have easily waited for a couple of days until someone collected them. There was no need to subject them to any possible ammonia spikes which could have been caused by the bacterial colony in the filter dying due to you switching it off. If you knew so much about fish you would have known that high ammonia is a big cause of disease and illness, and you have callously and unthinkingly exposed your fish to that risk by deliberately switching off the filter to make way for something as trivial and useless as a tree that will only be there for a few weeks. You madam, are a disgrace."
In fact, I suggest you post that, either as a reply from me or as a general response.
It isn't even as if she switched the tank off to make way for something important or extremely nessescary, she wants rid of the tank in order to PUT UP A BLEEDING CHRISTMAS TREE. Who does that seriously?
