Treated with melafix there tails tend to gow back fairly fast but only use half the proscribed dosage

Not always, I had one who's tail grew back really well, yet another one who died. I wouldn't like to guarantee their fins would grow back before they were badly affected and died, because it really does depend on the care given by the owner. In my case, the fish who died did better in a jar than when he was moved to a tank (which is when he died). I think once a fin rot sets into the body, it's a bit of a downhill struggle for the fish.

its really hard work caring for damaged bettas, i had about 10 come in on one shipment that werent up to standard, they all survived and i still have them 3 months down the line still not in a saleable condition , its takes time to get them back to health, ive had to maintain daily 75% water changes with daily melafix until growth started to show again, will prob have them for another month or so as well until they are ready to go to new homes. if youve got the time to care for them and know exaclty what they need there is no reason why you shouldnt buy one or two, every betta needs a good home regardless of some fin damage and its not like kevin isnt gunna treat them for this, have faith in the guy, he's not a novice after all. ive taken a look at the ones you mean and apart from the stated damage they are smashing bettas, also bare in mind that some people dont make it obvious of damage and blame the shipment to the purchaser instead, honesty goes a long way.

That happened to another betta enthusiast, she got 2 betta and their fins were fooked when they arrived and the seller maintained they left in perfect health, yet miraculously overnight both the fish munched themselves to mush, so wouldn't refund her as 'they were fine when they left'. That's so out of order, that poor girl was probably about £20 down and having to treat the fish. Not nice.

And all I was just saying earlier, don't guarantee the fish won't live or die cos if they are notorious fin munchers they might have another go in transit. But granted, if you maintain the water changes and melafix there is a very good chance, I just wouldn't like to guarantee it.

hmmmm.... thanks for the advices. i think i'll wait until i'm gain a bit more experence in fish keeping before i buy a damage fish. is not that i mind the "nursing" bit but i'm afraid of doing something wrong and end up killing it instead. i've bought fish without researching (when i first started) and made a mess of it and i don't really want to make the same mistake twice. not only is a waste of money and time, it also heart wenching seeing them die one by one and it knocked my confidence abit too. so i will just have to wait for the right fish B) and be quicker next time

I've never had to use any medication for damaged fins.
I just keep their water clean and the fins grow back on their own.
Maybe a med would help speed it up some, or would be good to use if the fin is extremely damaged, but if it's just a rip, or some of the tail is missing, etc... I'd just keep the water clean.

The 2 bettas in my 10 divided usually have a hole or a rip every now and then and it always heals.
Just within the last month, my female betta had a rip in her tail from tip to her body. It looked aweful, but 2 days later, it was already mended.

If it looks like some sort of bacterial infection is occuring, then treat with meds, if it just looks like damage from shipping.. I would just put them in a clean environment and let them heal on their own without meds... maybe with a little bit of salt.
