Good to know my girlfriend isn'y the only one that likes making rushed decisions about fish and then rolls her eyes whenever I tell her I need to know more before buying it. lol.

I'm the opposite, when I can drag my husband (he's usually kicking and screaming ) to a pet shop I am always very careful to only show him fish that I know we have room for and wont attack, eat or harass to death my other fish. I love my cory's so any other fish species HAS to be peaceful towards them. My husband actually surprised me the other day by admitting he liked one of the types of fish I showed him, but I suspect only because he knew I didn't have the funds at the time to buy them .

This would be why my husband has 2 JDs and two firemouth cichlids in his tank. Can't take him into a LFS!!

They grow too big for any tanks I've ever had so I never done any research on them.

Expensive fish food by the sounds of it.

Sorry if we're not allowed to mention other forums but you should probably take a look at the Red Tailed Cat growing competition thread on Monster Fish Keepers - some of those cute little guys are easily adding half an inch or so a WEEK!

My boyfriend is a liability because he likes to think he knows more about fish than me (not hard!) and always believes the lies LFS people tell him. For example, coming home with a peacock eel telling me it would stay at 6 inches, telling me red clawed crabs wouldn't eat my fish, buying 4 silver tip tetras which terrorized EVERYTHING until we could get a few more (which luckily calmed them down), adding a dwarf gourami pair in with my male fighter (luckily he is stupid and was fairly easily fooled by a re-arrange of plants), etc etc.

Usually a quick Google proves me right, so he's a bit better behaved now, except for buying a million types of shrimp and trying to add them to every tank when I'm not looking, despite the fact that I'm really squeamish about shrimp. Nearly had a heart attack when I was rearranging plants and a bloody great bamboo shrimp came out of the tank with them!

My missus doesnt care much for fish, its my hobby so i do whatever i want Although if i buy another fish, she asks "does this mean i can have another horse?"

I agree with iownupkr66..being single has it's advantages! I have tanks all over the house and keep what I want! When the kids moan...like number one son did this morning at having to lift my external to the sink for a deep clean....''You are 20 this year and could leave home if you like!'' ..............then I could have a fish room too!!!!!

You cannot keep a Red Tail Cat in any 'common' tank, even a 6 footer. Ever seen the show River Monsters? The guy on there caught an 80lb one. I'm pretty sure they get over 4ft long.

i know what you all mean, my boyfriend was the same before i got him his own tank, then i showed him the appropriate fish and he loved them, now though he wants a bigger tank

Oh don't worry Rynofasho, google images come into play a lot that day. I would actually love to have a house, nevermind a tank big enough where I could put a tank in where a red tail could live for life. But we don't have that home. Especially with four kids, two dogs, two cats and two rabbits, not to mention the fish tanks and the yellow bellied slider tank. In fact, if I did have a tank of such a size there's other fish I'd prefer to keep in it.

Come to think of it, when I was a kid, my best friends dad had a huge tank, I would safely say about 15ft long, at least four foot wide and about five foot tall. There was three fish in it and I'm pretty sure one of which was a red tailed cat, the other two I'm not so sure of, it was a long time ago. It even looked cramped in it. I know he only done a water change every six months too. There was no substrate so the tank was obviously hoaching and the smell would have made you boke when he lifted the lid to feed them.

The tank just didn't sit right in the house, was awkward looking. Long living room which it was in but that was still too small for a tank of such size.

Anyway, she's now turned her thought to discus.
I'm surprised as she only really likes platties, mollies and guppies. We'll see how it works out but she's going to have to do her own research for these fish I'm afraid.
