Hello,

I am completely new to this but over the course of the first day of my Easter holiday have immersed myself in all things goldfish.

My girlfriend has just bought our son three goldfish in a tiny tank. Didn't look right to me so I bought an 11litre one. That still doesn't look right so I now need to know what they SHOULD have. Please help.

I'm after the BEST but INEXPENSIVE,
Filter
Air-pump
Plants
Food
Gravel/Sand
Water conditioners
and naturally what size tank?

(Why couldn't she just go to Thorntons like I asked???)

Sorry to break it to you but if they're common goldfish they need about 40gal - 170litres...
I can't really give advise but know they need 20gal for 1 then 10 thereafter

if they ae fancy goldfish - more round and have flowy fins then they need 20 gallons for the fish and 10 gallons each for the other 2 fish MINIMUM
if they are common longer with short fins - then they need 30 gallons minimum for the first fish and 10-20 gallons each for the other 2 minimum

you will need a 60 gallon tank for 3 goldfish that is at least a 5 footer. you will need a fluval FX5 or something similar for a filter

180 ltr tank minimum for fancy fish 270 litre for commons

i am afraid your best bet is to take them back to your lfs as it sounds like theyre not practicle if i where you id tak them back and give your kid a easter egg or if hes very young swap em for fake ones

try ebay , gumtree , freecycle or local boot sale for a tank
the tank also has to be cycled
look here and read the cycling sections

YOU should return the goldfish and get some shrimp when the tanks cycled sorry hun

Have to agree with the others, 40-60g minimum depending. And that really means trying hard to take them back or to re-home them (sometimes people have ponds)... perhaps you could trade for a chocolate goldfish, but usually they only have the rabbits in the stores.
