hi all,,i have a 42 uk gallon tank, with 5 small jewel cichlids,,a cuckoo catfish,,and a tropheus ilangi,,,i know the ilangi is from another lake,,but got told one ,,of this type of fish would be fine,,and should mix with other mbuna cichlids,,,which it has up untill last week.
for some reason it seems to want to take over all the terrortories in the tank,,,the fish was fine until one died a couple of weeks ago,,old age,,,but the fish that died seemed to be the boss of the tank,,know the tropheus wants to take over,,.
do you think i should take the main rock out of the tank and stock with more fish,,to calm down the aggression,,,or would this be a mistake,,,,please help.,,,if stocking the tank up is right,,how many fish do i add.

Try to be patient in this section, there aren't that many old world keepers and even fewer keep tropheus. It can sometimes take 3-4 days for someone with knowledge to answer here.

Tropheus are known to be highly aggressive, because of that and their susceptibility to bloat they are generally recommended to be kept in a species tank.

I'm not very familiar with jewels so I can't really say much about their behavior. However, it appears to me with the death of your tank "boss" the tropheus is now trying to take control. You have a few options, you could rehome the tropheus, completely rearranged your rockwork or add more rocks. I prefer to avoid an open tank, though it will cut down on aggression as no one will have places to hide, IMO the lack of security stresses them out. :good:
