I have a Gold Severum and a Green Severum and I noticed that my green sev has some outstandingly long fins, while my Gold does not. Can you sex based on shape of fins? What do you think?

Gold Severum, shorter rounded fins.

With severums I think you sex them from facial markings. I could be wrong though

I always thought that too, until i realized how differently shaped their fins are. Unless its the difference between a green and a gold severums that causes that. It was more a curious question, as to whether or not fin shape plays a role in sexing them. I don't think mine are old enough yet to be sexed based on facial markings

Females tend to have a plain patch between the eyes. Not sure how fin length works with sevs but there is a big difference with your two

I know, me and my husband have been admiring the green as his fins have gotten really long a pretty as he has gotten bigger. The gold's fins have gotten really nice as well. They haven't gotten long, but the red it's sporting is stunning!

fin shape can be a rough guide to determing sex with most cichlids and in the pics its clear to see the difference but the gold sev looks very young and mat develop as it ages.

markings on the face is also a way of sexing sevs although not every gold has these so time will tell.

The gold severums and the green are both the same age. About 7 months old. Getting close to 3.5 inches

is that actually a gold sev or a yellow sev? or am i being silly here

It was sold to me as a gold severum. he/she is still young and hasn't colored up fully yet. he/she is starting to get the red markings that most gold serums get as they age. note the fins? Used to be completely yellow

on closer inspection it must be a gold because of the orange dots on its bottom fin
