is there any wayother then venting to tell the sex of a Jack Dempsey?

I've heard that the dorsal fin is longer and pointed on males and shorter and more rounded on females but I really have no means of comparison...

maybe if someone is sure of their fish's sex they could post a pic for comparison, or even a pic of a JD pair...? I will try to get a pic of mine but it is REALLY small...

or maybe there is another method?

it's not that I won't vent it , it's just it is so small the differences would probably be miniscule at this point.... and again, i have no means for comparison.... if there was a pair i would be able to distinguish which is which by venting but otherwise my one JD could be a tought guess...

Nelly... After reading that I'm a little confused... the sexing info was great but someone said that a Pale JD is not stressed and that the darker lateral compressions were brought on by stress?? i though it was the other way around..... I thought the darker and more flushed a fish was, the better. and when they are pale it was a sign of stress..... can anyone help me out here....?

Well that seems easy enough.... but this is probably something that appears over time, is it not?

I would immagine that juvinile JD's wouldn't show this charistic at all, male or female, untill the earlier stages of maturity

yeah .... i'm not too sure whats going on here, but the little JD seems great anyway.... hes always cruizing around the tank, REALLY active and interested in EVERYTHING...

anyway I tried to get some pics of the little thing in hopes of determining the sex..... and this is what i came up with....

According to the guide lines posted above.....

it's a male because of the elongated and pointy dorsal fin....

BUT

it's a female because of 5 blue dots around the face and gills area...

hahahaha, so you can see my Dilemma.....

here are the pics ! and please, fellow fanatics, forgive me for netting the little guy, otherwise i get blurs.... it was a 2 person team shot! lol ! so it only took a second...

Sorry for the bad Quality
anyway, from these pics the dorsal seems long and pointed..... but you can't see those spots I saw on the face and gills soo..... YOUR CALL ! hahaha!

It is way too young to sex. You will begin to see the the distinct characteristics come forth over time as it grows.

I believe I was the one in nelly's post who said something about the fish colorations... a darker fish means its feeling agressive and/or territorial. My guy turns almost black everytime I clean the tank cause he thinks im gonna steal his territory haha A normal jd is a tan to purple background with the characterictic blue/green color spots. Black is stress and if it turns very light then it is scared and feeling submissive

yeah I knew it was going to be to young... i am just looking for some examples here...i took the opportunity to post some pics and get some advice and some oppinions on the best way to sex..... I have learned quite a bit today so i'm pretty sure i'll be able to tell once it gets a bit bigger.... other wise, keep the ideas and facts flowing! this is great!

and as for the other posts, that makes more sense now, maybe I misinterpeted what you meant. It makes sence that a fish would make its self darker when feeling territorial and such..... I thought you meant stressed as in sick... thanks for the clarification

I thought you meant stressed as in sick

Ya, if stressed in that way then the fish will more likely be on the lighter size, but there are better way to tell sickness. The fish will become very skiddish, swimming around the tank in fear everytime you come near the tank and will prob not eat at all

Sorry if the other post I left for nelly was confusing, try to say thinkgs as clear as possible :good:
