Hi guys,

Im new to this site and to be honest new to the hobby aswel lol
I just want to know if its true that guppy fry are all born as females and when you can truthfully tell the sex of them.
And whats it like for other livebearers? just the same?

Thanks Matt

Welcome to the forum Matt. The fish are all born with the correct sex but like even is true in people, they are very hard to tell apart until they start to mature. Once the fry of livebearers are about 1/2 of their adult size, the males will generally start to show a gonopodium developing and that can be used to sex them. The guppies and some other livebearers, but not all, have other obvious characteristics that differentiate males from females. These characteristics also start to show at about the same stage of development.

Ditto. Their not born females just look it.

They mature at different rates but guppies usualy mature from 6 weeks old some can even take 4-5 months to mature.
