Hi,

Is it difficult to sex baby guppies? I have about 7 which are a month or so old, and they all have the colouring of the mother. It is a little hard to sex them at the moment as they are still quite small, so can't really tell by the fins. Do I have to wait until they are bigger, or is there some foolproff way of finding out?

Also i just noticed that one of my baby guppies has hardly any tail fin to speak of, he/she just has a kind of sword bit sticking out. I've read that any fish with abnormalaties, has to be killed. Is this the case? He/she has survived this long and is happy swimming around as normal.

Cheers
Bev

At a month old it can be hard to sex most livebearers. As you said the anal fin shape has the typical female triangular shape on almost all of them at that age.

It all depends how quick your fry develop-6 to 8 weeks and you should be able to tell for sure-once you are experienced you will find it easier when they are slightly younger by noticing the different anal fins...Enjoy the breeding-i do! :good:

The reason they all have the moms color is they haevnt matured yet. If you cant tell by fins, you'll be able to tell when the guys become real pretty.
