I was told by many that my 40H is ok. Gives it 4 and a half times it's length, 1 and a half times its width, and plenty of top room for however tall it gets.

A single specimen can technically be kept in as small as a 35 gallon, but as a recommendation I'm going to agree with 55 or larger - he will do better, grow better, and live longer with the proper space.

Is he going to be going solo, or will he have tankmates?

I have heard of them up to 12" but haven't personally seen any of that size. I got mine a couple months ago but it was only an inch long at the time. Now its 4" but its still got a lot of growing to do.
