How big of a tank do you need for 1 adult severum? What about a breeding pair (tank size)?

One is a 4ft 75g IMO, so 48" x 18" x 20". For a pair, 100g, 48" x 24" x 24" or 5ft minimum.

Approx 300L tank. More important is the length and width, so 4ft being a minimum, 18" wide.

in my opinion id say a 55 gallon tank is the minimum size for a severum, as most severums reach only 8-10" in home aquariums in the wild though they reach 12" or sometimes even more. severums are quite peaceful for being a cichlid

im with minxy on this 1 . 55g simply isnt big enough. most 4 foot 55g tanks are 12 to 15 inches deep ( front to back) now imagine a 10 inch sev swimming in that and trying to turn round. its like you living in a room 3 foot wide. just simply isnt enough space

Actually the most common blueprint is 12.5 inches width, a 10 inch Sev (and that is being generous I would say 8 or 9 inches more commonly) shouldn't have a problem turning around, it's a wider tank then he is. That's just my opinion though, and I am no Sev keeper.

no offence to you i know youre an experienced fish keeper but minx and myself are sev keepers ( borderline fanatics lol) and from experience of keeping them believe me these guys need plenty of space.

as for the 12.5 inch wide tank with 8 to 10 inch fish , imagine if you lived in a room that was only a few inches wider than your body. sure you would physicly fit in it but you wouldnt exactly have a comfortable life.

I understand was just playing devils advocate is all, still think it would probably be fine but like I said not much experience with them,. I have seen a lot of full grown specimens, working at a pet store people bring them in quite often. I will take your word for it though.

Yeah full grown sev's are very chunky chaps, not the most agile either, they do need the extra space to turn and give themself some space to stretch their fins IMO.

I'm not a serevum keeper but 55 gal is no way large enough for a breeding pair. I have a your breeding pair of blue acaras in a 55 gal and they are fine but even for these fish I wish I had a larger tank for them and they are not nearly as big as the serevum.

Sorry but 55 gal is not a good tank for a breeding pair.

I feel you could start the severum out in a 55 gal tank but once it is full grown and you see how big it is you should upgrade the tank for him. Unless you have a small one because like people some are tall some are short. But most likely you will need a larger tank then 55.

I have a breeding pair of Gold severums that I bought as babies over a year ago. I can say from my experience that the 55 gallon tank I have them in seems fine. In fact I had 5 severums in there and eventually moved the others out because it seemed the baby fish were disappearing. They have hatched a few litters and the current one is certainly the largest and will probably be the first to make it as they are now about 3 weeks old. I have heard that pairs often take a few litters to get the hang of raising their young and that seems to have been the case with my pair. With regards to the size and such though I can't comment accept that one day I had eggs in my tank on a near vertical flower pot turned upside down with a the back open like a cave. The fish defended that half of the tank. I think in any aquarium, the first few days after the hatch the fish will hardly move while they defend a hatch that they have buried near the site. After that it seems that they start moving around the tank a bit more. I have my tank decorated with fake plants for cover as the fish seem to eat real ones. As the tank size is conscerned thought this tank seems to be fine for this pair. I would say that they might even be fine with a 40 gallon but im not going to speculate.
