i heard severums are very herbivorous and love a more planted tank. what plants wont these amazing fish eat?? and are they ok with angels??
thanks guys

sevs are fine with angels , but as for plants , if you find any let us know!!! when i did finally find a plant mine wouldnt eat ( onion plant) they just uprooted it out of spite and dumped it up the other end of the tank

Plastic or silk plants for severums, even then the little devils will tow them round the tank if they dont like where you have put them

hmm. :S whats the best way to deck out a nice looking tank for sev's then? cus i love the look of a natural planted tank with lots of plants wood and rock. has anyone got any pictures of their tanks?? thanks

Potentially using a small "bedding" of rocks around the base of some sturdy rooting plants such as Echinodorus or Cryptcoryne species could work well. The rocks, if placed close enough to the base of the plant, can act as a shield against Sevs digging. Then again you have the problem of them eating/tearing them to shreds. In theory it can work for holding them down, you just have to make sure the rocks are sturdy enough on the base of the tank, then put substrate around and thus the plant in the middle. You've just got to find something they wont eat. You could try this idea with the Onion Plant, in a deep enough and long enough tank they look stunning when planted well.

Good luck,
James

If you want to plow through the other pics I have some shots of my tanks with severums in. Not the greatest tanks mind  I was given some silk plants that are usually used in vivariums that hang on the size, these are great as they cannot be dug up and look nice too (I think anyway)

star they look absolutely fantastic!! And i love your sevs!! they are gorgeous!! its really made me want a pair now! are all of them really silk? i think the look great!! iv heard they prefer a ph of 6.5-7 but my tank is 7.5-7.7ish. should this be a problem? i could always lower it to accomodate them by having more bogwood and a peat filter.
thanks guys, real nice and fantastic pics on that post

Sevs will be fine in pH 7.5, mine are and they are very happy. Never tried them with plants as everyone said it was pointles. I use the silk hanging plants, and currently got another silk planted in the gravel, and they've not touched them. My bichir loves sleeping in them.

aww thanks. Some are just plain cheap plastic plants my lfs does an 18" plant for £5, looks horried when first in the tank but a little algae allowed to grow on it to dull the bright green and they dont look too bad. Sevs should be ok with your ph levels :good:

No plants are save with severums in my experience.

They either get eaten, dug up or ripped apart. My favourite plant (also an onion plant) got ruthlessly 'pruned' by my severum. This involved biting the leaf, then swimming as fast as they could in the opposite direction until it ripped through the leaf. The severum at least got entertainment from this but it was annoying to witness (but to the joy of anyone watching my reaction to this).

Star, those plants...are they exoterra silk ones? Can you post a link of them so I know what to get :)

Are they exoterra ones too? Just that I haven't got time to get out to Swallow but I do need to buy a few things online at some point which would make buying the plants online affordable

I think yours were like these:

I recall someone said they looked like wacky backy plants some time back

Yep, they look like cannabis plants but IMO cannabis/hemp leaves are a lovely shape. I have that one and the other type in my tank.

Think they are Exoterra. They are designed for reptile use, but I asked the bloke who assured me they were fine for aquariums too. I've had mine about 2/3 months now and all good :good:

Mine look like that, I had no idea what shop they came from they were given to me.
