I have a MARBLED SAILFIN PLECO - it has a large unusual growth coming out from one of his gills. Its a greeny colour like fibrous tissue coming out of the gill.

I have never seen this before - dealt with fungus in the past but never this! The fish is also swimming fine - eating fine and acting as there is nothing wrong with it.

Fish is in quarantine tank - tried treating with Melafix - this did nothing! Tried Pimafix too - nothing again.

ANY SUGGESTIONS - HELP! Afraid fish may be past treatment - I just have no idea what is wrong whether its a bacterial problem maybe? I was away for 2 wks and the growth was there when I got back.

Any help would be great!

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Is it possible to load a pic up of the sick fish.
Any excess mucas on the gills or body of the fish.
Is the fish flicking and rubbing.
Do the gills look swollen or inflamed.
Is it just one gill thats affected.
How does his mouth look.
Hows the fish breathing.

Taken from the link.

Does it sound like this.

Clinical signs

Fish fungus appears as grey/white patches on the skin or gills that resemble tufts of cotton-wool. At a later stage they may become brown or green as they trap sediment or algae. If the fish is removed from the water, the fungus appears as a slimy matted mass. Saprolegnia normally establishes as small, focal infections that then spread rapidly over the body or gills. As it spreads, healthy tissue is destroyed. There is often little inflammation unless there is an underlying bacterial infection. Microscopic examination shows broad, non-septate (no dividing cell walls) hyphae of varying diameters.

it could be a bit of plant matter (ie: java moss) that has gotten caught in the gills. Post a pic and we'll have a look.

Never thought of that colin, you amaze me with your knowledge.
