Went around a few shops today, looking for a new sev, to keep my lovely red-spotted gold, "Honey" company today.
Found some very nice Rotkeils (advertised as red shouldered green severums I think !) at Maidenhead Aquatics in Havant (Hants), but there was definately whitespot in the tank. The thought of dragging out my Q tank from the shed and setting it up with mature media from one of my Eheims was not an attractive thought. Pricey fish too (£25ish)
Ended up at Creature Comforts in Totton (hants) where they have some amazing wild green sevs in. Really, really dark colours. Only about 3.5" long but really dark, with lots of blue in the face and red in the anal fins. So walked away with a lovely sev (supsecting a female) for £15.
Has settled amazingly well in the tank so far. Honey is a little put out about the new companion, but it all seems fairly good natured. I am sure the new girl will feed tonight. She is already grazing around the tank.
Not sure of a name yet. Possibly Camilla. Any suggestions ?

Photos will follow !

Don't know how to post (or link to) pics straight from a post. If anyone knows how to I would appreciate the knowledge.

i dont think u can direct link (or embed an image) from taht site as it uses flash. but if u were to upload ur pics to imageshack.us, photobucket.com or similar then u could embed the image/s into ur post

they both look like good severums but i cant help u with the names

Your red spot looks like my little guy. The new Green does look like a female and a very pretty one nice find. See these guys are so addictive. I'm getting a 90 gal tank this week and I'm thinking could I fit more severums. . There is a 9" adult Gold severum with a messed up eye that I want to save at my LFS.

Thanks. Looks like I'll need to set up an account at imageshack or photobucket.

The Green looks like it could be Heros Appendiculatus (could be wrong) but that would be my guess, too young to sex I think, but again my guess would be male.

At least it wasnt advertised as a 5 striped red faced blue mask severum, thats very confusing!

Lovely fish btw

Just did a bit of Googling on this and the upshot seems to be that there is no agreement whatsoever on the classification of all the types and sub-types of the genus Heros. Most now seem to consider appendiculatus as a defunct species classification now, and that it is now just a subtype of H.Efasciatus.

A wise chap on another forum called DavidR on Mosterfishkeepers said this :-

"It seems to me that the greatly increased pressure from the hobby has led to it overtaking biologists in catching and discovering new varieties, giving us a big backlog of yet-to-be-classified fish. This combined with the hobbyists generally sloppy use of taxonomic Latin and the industries desire to give fish interesting names to help them sell makes for a nightmare situation regarding names! "

Seems to sum it up pretty well !

Interesting points

You can't link to other sites such as MFK...notice the link has had text replaced to make it useless...
