I am using a secondhand heater that comes with no instructions. Its a tronic 150w heater.

This is what ive done so far. Placed in tank and left for half an hour.

Turned on heater untill light just comes on. it says around 74 on the dial. Left it for half hour it turned off. water feel still cold to touch so ive turned it up again untill light comes on at 79 water still feels colder than my other tank which has no heater and is at house temp.

I'm going to get a thermometer now as i thought you just had to set dial and away it would go and heat water to that temp. but not so looking at the net.

Am i doing this right and once i get the preffered water temp what setting do i set it on the dial leave it alone or adjust the dial it to corraspnd to the temp. there is no fish in this tank only a filter

Thanks

Basically you just set it to the temp you want (so 29oC ish if you're cycling), plug it in and leave it. You don't need to switch it off and on again. Get a thermometer (one that hangs in the water is better than one that sticks to the glass) and you can regularly check on the temp with that. The heater pilot light will come on when the tank temp has started to dip below what it's set too and is basically telling you that it's working as is warming it back up again.

Thanks i have now got a thermometer that hangs inside tank. I do not need to cycle it as im using my filter from another tank as im upgrading the fish into a bigger tank. I will be watching and testing tho to watch out for any mini cycles of spikes.

Its now reading at 22c is this good for danios.
