Hi everyone :D :D :D I am really happy, I have just been given a small 2.6 gallon tank, all I need to buy is some gravel and a heater.

I want to set up the tank for my babies, currently living in the breader tank in my main tank.

I am going to the lfs tomorrow to get what is required, i.e. gravel, plant, ornament etc. and i was thinking of then doing the following:

Do my weekly water change on my main tank and instead of throwing out the water away put it into the new tank. Then rinse one of the filters into the new tank (I am actually due to rinse one of my filters over the next week or so as part of my maintenance).

Wait 2 days and make sure all is settled then test the water and check temperature is running the same as the main tank.

If all ok then add my fry to their new home. :fun: :fun:

Does this all sound ok, am I doing it the right way??? or do you all have any further suggestions. :-(

I am sooooooooooooooo excited, to be able to give my fry a place to grow that will be more exciting that a square breading box.

Look forward to what suggestions you all might have

:D what kinda fry is it, how many do you have and how old are they?

if you put old water from the main tank into the fry tank, wouldn't you be brinign all the ammonia, nitrite nad wahtever stuff might be in there to the fry tank? are you trying to cycle the tank? If you have old filter media that you can use for the fry tank that would be great sin ce most of the beneficial bacteria is located there.

Firstly to answer your question they are both Guppy and Molly fry

16 are 3 weeks old and the latest 3 fry are 3 days old.

if you put old water from the main tank into the fry tank, wouldn't you be brinign all the ammonia, nitrite nad wahtever stuff might be in there to the fry tank?
Sorry I'm confused by what you say, I thought that was to point bringing the water across and then adding the filter media. My main tank has no ammonia or nitrite at present and I would be careful not to suck up any of the grubby bits that we clean out.

Have I missunderstood you - or have I missunderstood what I've read before about cycling a new tank from old filter media.

Could someone help me clear my confusion -_-

i would advise adding clean water (declorinated) to your new tank and adding some gravel from your existing tank as this gravel will contain benificial bacteria. are you going to have a filter in your fry tank? if so, you could add some filter media from your other filter to the new one, which would help alot.
