hi everyone,

im looking at setting up a second FW.

Please see below......

(Edited to rename title)

that seems very cool, what are you planing on the dimensions and are you doing fishless cycle or fish in cycle?

Sorry I was half way through typing and my computer decided to post it without my saying .grrrrr.

At the moment I have a 180 litre corner unit, but Im looking at setting up a 67ltr aswell.

Im not 100% on how to do it and have a few questions. The way Im thinking is......
1 - Fill up half the tank with conditioned water, fill the other half with water change water from the 180 litre.
2 - Heat to correct temp.
3 - Add Fluval. (Media has been floating in the 180ltr for the last month)

My question is -
1 - Would this eliminate the cycle process?

many thanks
gaz

i dont think so, cause what ive been told by many of the experts here, you need to fully cycle a tank, it be better if you take the filter from your old tank( if its fully cycle) and use it, you also need ammonia

here is the link to cycle a tank

This is very similar to what I will be doing, although I wasn't planning on moving water from my established tank to my new tank(s). I have been running a 2nd filter in my established tank and plan to move it to my new tank which will reduce the cycle time, since the filter already has the bacteria living in it.

If you have just been floating the media in the old tank, it may have a little bacteria on it but not like it would have if you ran the new filter on the old tank. It can't hurt to use that media in the new tank to jump start the cycle but I would still use the ammonia and test for a week or more before adding any fish. The drained water will not help much at all, the bacteria that we cultivate on our filters really does not live free swimming in the water. There might be a very few bacteria there but there will certainly be higher than desired nitrates and other contaminants that we never measure. If you want your water change to jump start the new filter, clean the old filter in the new tank instead. The nasty looking gunk that comes of the old filter is rich with the right bacteria and can definitely shorten a fishless cycle.
