If I wanted to temporarily set up a brackish tank......would I need to get rid of all the sand before converting back to tropical?
I am just assuming that any substrate involved would retain the salt and therefore harm any future freshwater fish??

Probably not. Since the salt is soluble, simply rinsing the sand in hot water should flush it all out. If you were really worried you might let the sand sit in a bucket for a week, doing a couple of water changes in between. Salt shouldn't chemically bond with silica sand (silica sand being essentially non-reactive).

Assuming you're not using plants, you'd only need just enough sand to cover the substrate, so it isn't a lot of sand anyway.

Cheers,

Neale

Why only a temporary brackish set up?

Why plain sand? For BW, aragonite sand or crushed coral is best, to maintain a pH around 8.

Only got a rio 125 available to set up at present.......until purchase of "large" new tank sometime in the not too distant future.
Was really only a question, out of interest really. The little sand we would use,we would probably get rid of anyway.
Thanks for the replies all.x.
